COMBI13 RIDES THE SKA vs SCOOT!

Once again this Summer Seattle will play host to the Ska vs Scoot, scooter rally – And what better way to round things up than with a great ska show..?! ‘Natalie Wouldn’t’ head up a strong line up with their uptown Ska sounds, also you’ve got Do the Dog’s Acoustic songsmith ‘Drewvis’ along with Soul Reggae upstarts ‘The Valuables‘.

When we were asked to do the Gig Poster art for this show, we nearly bit their hand off..!

COMBI13 ROCK THE LONDON ROCKIN ROLLERS!

Rollerderby is one hell of a sport…In fact, some might even describe it as a subculture..! Last season Combi13 proudly did the Gigposter graphics (see below) for the UK’s Premier team, the London Rockin’ Rollers..! Wanting to know more about this most unique of past-times, we spoke to one of the Rollers co-founders – Margy Bargy..!

So are the dirty rumors true – I hear you’ve hung up your skates for good..?!

My skates have been gathering some dust for a few months now… but “for good” sounds so permanent *shudder*. Awaiting the chiropractor’s thumbs up and then who knows what way the story will go!

Roller Derby seems to be getting more and more popular by the day, with teams springing up everywhere – Have you and the London Rockin’ Rollers noticed the public’s interest grow in recent years..?

When the Rockin’ Rollers started there were only two other leagues in the UK – the Blitz Dames and the London Rollergirls. There are now approx. 30 leagues all over the country! And as more women come to watch their first bouts, so too will more rollergirls be made – it’s inevitable! You can’t watch a live bout and not fall in love with the game. After every bout the LRR get a flood of fresh meat who are smitten. Three years ago if you mentioned roller derby outside the circles you’d be met with a confused expression – these days the surprise is coming from our end as more and more folk are replying, “Yeah, I’ve heard of it!”

Your logo was designed by Vince Ray, one of my personal inspirations, what the link between him & the London Rockin’ Rollers..?

Vince Ray is friends with a few of our founders and veterans so he seemed to be the natural first choice to ask to design our logo. We like it!

To go along with that ever growing popularity there was recently a RollerDerby themed movie released starring Drew Barrymore – what are your thoughts on that?

First thoughts were, “They named the film after WhipIt!” – she’s one of our veteran skaters. The whole derby community worldwide is psyched about the movie but the UK seems to be the last to get it – we have to wait until April 2010 to see it in cinemas here. They used real rollergirls alongside the actresses – some of the finest derby players in the world – so kudos for that. One of them, Sarah Hipel of the Detroit Derby Girls (aka Killbox) spent a few weeks with us this summer sharing her prowess. We’ll be looking past Drew Barrymore and Juliet Lewis to squeal at glimpses of her on the track – she’s our star of the movie!

Having looked at your website I notice you have ongoing trials for new members to the team, or Fresh Meat as you reffer to them..! Is anyone welcome to come try out..? What qualities do you need to be a London Rockin’ Roller..?

Anyone is welcome to be a Rockin’ Roller – there are no tryouts yet but there is a beginner’s course that girls need to pass before training with the advanced girls. The only qualities needed are a passion for the game and a degree of fearlessness. The Rockin’ Rollers have also been coined as “the party league” – team that up with a successful bouting season in very rock’n'roll surroundings and you get a good idea of what being a Rockin’ Roller is all about!
